To make my point clear to you, imagine with me the following situation. You are very delighted to try the last version of Windows 7, the system that has been praised on the media and you can see its ads covering all places!!
So, you (end user) are longing to use it in your old PC, why not?? Everyone is stressing the capability of Windows 7 to work efficiently on old devices and why shouldn't it work? It is a production of Great Microsoft!
After you installed the Windows 7, you came to the drivers installation ceremony (it is part of the ritual installation of Windows if you are not familiar with it), so, to install your system drivers, you check devices manufacturer's websites after being confident that you will find the right one for your system, and why not?? Microsoft has been swearing that its system is the best system on earth and drivers problems are a trait of GNU Linux only.
Unfortunately, the bad news will surprise you (you don't want to hear them, or you are eager to hear, of course it depends on which side you are on). The news is that you will get a text file instead of the driver telling you that your devices are not supported anymore. So, you are shocked and frustrated!!
This story is real and shows us how bad are the proprietary software, at least from my side!!
If the companies want to force you to upgrade, no one can say "no". By the way, I think that there is a similar story on windows7sins.org.

Hm

Sure, Open Source Software is nice because you can have the code and maybe edit it to your wish. But hey, just because you can not have the source code of a proprietary, just because they are not open source does not mean that they are evil.
Sure, your example happends. But please, you can not deny that similar happends when you use open source. For me, it took me over a few months until my wlan and my sound card worked under ubuntu (I also tried it under fedora, but was neither successful). Under Win7, which was preinstalled, the wlan and the sounds just worked fine out-of-the box.
Well, for me, I sure do prefer open source, but as long as I do not get some good reasons for not use prorietary software, I will also use some proprietary software.
