I have been using GNU/Linux for two years so far, and I'm using Ubuntu (GNOME). Over this period, I have tested a lot of download manager applications; unfortunately, I can't find the one that suits best for me, because what I have in mind was a program which more or less is simple, lightweight and practical. I don't want a download manager which is crowded with features nor a primitive one and certainly I don't want one that works via a command line/terminal!
So, I had been experimenting with a number of such applications, but for one reason or another I can't rely in one of them!
I tested "Download for x" (aka D4X) which is in fact a very good program, but it was unmaintained for a long term, no one is developing it (for more than about two years) and in addition to that, I do not like the program's license! (it is licensed under the Artistic license 1.0 and the Free Software Foundation believes that it is not free enough, and also the fedora project has removed all software licensed in the same license).
wxDownload Fast (aka wxDFast) also stopped development since long time and still there are some problems that have not been fixed yet.
JDownloader is a very excellent program and it has many great features, especially with sharing sites (rapidshare, megaupload, zshare, etc) but it is a java program, and although it was programmed in an excellent way, I don't think that one day I will use a program which is written in Java as a download manager: D (I think that Java is more suitable for large applications). A point of view)
Gwget is very simple and primitive, and KDE users have their own version Kget :)
Also I do not want to use Firefox add-ons as my download manager. I prefer a download manager that is separated from the browser, so that if anything happened to your browser (a crash for example) it won't affect the download.
Am I Ungainly? :D , NO! but these are not my needs :D
But when I tried Uget, I found it the best download manager for me ^_^
It is a Program that is written in GTK + (the same libraries used by Gnome), lightweight, simple and has a clean interface, practical, easily integrated with Firefox through flashgot, support queue download,
Simply it is the perfect program for me :)
With Uget 1.5, there is a new logo, new website, and many other features. It could be used with many distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora and their derivatives ^_^
Here are some of the program features
- Free (as in freedom, also free of charge) and Open Source.
- Simple, easy-to-use and lightweight.
- Supports resume download, so if your connection is lost, you don't need to start from beginning.
- Classify downloads, and every category has an independent configuration and queue.
- Queue download.
- Integration with Firefox through Flashgot plugin.
- Monitoring clipboard.
- Import downloads from HTML file.
- Batch download .
And more .

Torrent file (not verified) on Wed, 01/20/2010 - 14:10Thanks for this post. Great work. I read some information about problems with using Gwget and want to say that if you use Liferea with gwget to download enclosures please ensure you do not use gwget 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 as downloads won't work with those versions. The reason is an API change in the DBUS API of gwget. For gwget the DBUS function Liferea did use until now was considered an internal API not used by external programs.
hi
sikiş (not verified) on Mon, 01/04/2010 - 04:07I like Uget, but it doesn't limit download speed...
So I prefer Multiget, at the moment
Choice
yoyo (not verified) on Sat, 12/12/2009 - 04:58But of course! It just makes sense that most gnome users are lured by this kind of simple download manager. KDE users, used to get ultra-extensive configurability tend more to use programs that offer the same, such as jdownloader.
Choice in a Windows environment is good, but choice in an open source environment is way better!
Here's a nice little RS one
